AIO - (All In One) A cloth diaper with both a waterproof covering AND an absorbent interior. Changes just like a disposable in only 1 step.
Pocket Diaper or AI2 (All In Two)- A cloth diaper with a waterproof covering and a pocket or sleeve for stuffing inserts that provide absorbency.
OS (One Size Fits All) - A cloth diaper that is adjustable in size. Most OS diapers fit babies and toddlers from 8-30+lbs.
Wrap (Cover) - A wrap goes over a prefold or fitted diaper which has no waterproof covering. Some wraps are also adjustable in size. Wraps offer no absorbency and so require a prefold or fitted diaper making for a 2 step changing process (first taking off the cover and then the diaper). Only 1 wrap is recommended for every 3-4 diapers in rotation but most prefold/fitted diaper users can get by on 3 or 4 total if needed. Most wraps or covers also function well as a swim diaper.
Prefold - A prefold is a rectangular shaped flat cloth diaper with an absorbent pad sewn into the fabric. Prefolds come in a variety of sizes, thicknesses, and fabrics, and require a wrap or cover for waterproofness.
Fitted Diaper - A fitted diaper is shaped rather than flat like a prefold and fastens around your baby with velcro or snaps. Requires no folding like a prefold but does require a waterproof wrap/cover.
Leg Gussets - Leg gussets are sewn into the leg of the diaper or cover and provide extra protection against blow-outs.
Inserts - Absorbent pads that are stuffed into the pocket or sleeve of the diaper. Most will agitate out of the diaper during the wash cycle so no need to remove them before putting into your pail.
Doubler - Absorbent pads you can place inside your diaper next to baby's skin for more absorbency.
Liners - Liners are a thin layer of fabric placed inside the diaper for easier clean-up or to help wick moisture away from baby's skin. Some liners are even flushable!
Hook & Loop - Marketed under the brand names Velcro and Aplix.
PUL - Polyurethane laminated fabric. Used to create the waterproof factor in covers, wraps, shells, and pocket diapers.
